Each year, as the holiday season approaches, donors supply new books, toys, and other items for patients who visit 成人头条's Pediatrics and Pediatric Subspecialties clinics during the month of December.

The holiday spirit聽was聽once again聽alive and abundant in the聽WMed聽Health Pediatrics聽clinics聽as staff聽went the聽extra mile to spread cheer to patients and families聽throughout the month of December.聽

Since arriving at聽WMU Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed)聽in 2018, Mariam聽Ischander, MBChB, has led a toy drive that has now become a celebrated annual holiday tradition at聽WMed聽Health鈥檚 Pediatrics and Pediatric Subspecialties聽clinics聽at the medical school鈥檚 Oakland Drive Campus.聽

Each year, as the holiday season approaches, donors supply new books, toys, and other items for patients who visit during聽the month of December.聽Each child can聽pick聽out聽a Christmas gift after an appointment with a provider, and they may聽also take home a gift for each sibling.聽

鈥淭he excited reactions聽of children receiving Christmas gifts聽are treasured聽magic moments聽that聽delight the whole pediatric team,鈥 Dr.聽Ischander聽said.聽

The holiday toys, books, and other items are donated by medical school faculty, staff, and others from the Kalamazoo community. This year, hundreds of items were available, including cars, dolls, games, books, stuffed animals, lotions, blankets, hats, scarves,聽shirts,聽shoes聽and coloring books, Dr.聽Ischander聽said. Pajamas聽were a major Christmas hit this year for聽kids of聽different ages.

The gifts were grouped in age ranges from newborn to聽adult,聽and patients in the Pediatrics, Pediatric Subspecialties, and Pediatric聽Orthopedic聽Surgery practices had the chance to pick something special throughout December. This year, Dr. Ischander wants to especially thank Catherine Drake for her tremendous effort to bring this project to life

鈥淥ur patients 鈥 and residents 鈥 look forward to聽this outpouring of generosity each December,鈥澛爏aid聽Erica聽VanderKooy, MD, program director for the Pediatrics residency program. 鈥淚t鈥檚聽a聽tangible way to give back to our community and聽to make our patients鈥 days just a little bit better.鈥澛

In addition to the annual toy drive, physicians from the Pediatrics residency program at聽WMed, with the help of聽Ariel Huth,聽WMed聽Health social worker,聽also adopted a聽family聽for the holiday聽season.聽聽

鈥淲hile we care for children every day in the clinic, this is聽a great way聽to聽focus in聽on a specific family聽who聽could use some extra holiday cheer,鈥澛燚r. VanderKooy said.
